The weekend of October 21-22nd I participated in the second race of the Lexus Lace Up Running Series. This was my second half marathon outside of Los Angeles County.
When I arrived in Ventura I knew that it would be a great weekend. The weather was perfect. I walked around the pier and relaxed before race day.
I woke up at 4:15 AM to make sure I had enough time to get ready and make it to the shuttle. We had a late start so I started running at 6:54 AM.
My goal was to stay in between an average pace of 8:45-9:00 min per mile so that I could finish in 2 hours or less. For the first eight miles I was able to achieve my pace goal. The course was peaceful and serene. I was able to fully enjoy the run by admiring the beauty of nature.
During my run I kept repeating to myself “I can do this. Keep going.” I repeated positive mantras throughout my run to stay focused and upbeat.
At mile 10 I hit my first wall. The tenth mile had an incline. I had a flashback of the feeling I felt at mile 10 of the San Francisco Half Marathon. I was determined to not let it consume me.
I pushed through the burn in my upper quads and did the best I could.
There was another small incline at mile 12. I struggled a bit but somehow caught my second wind.
I finished my 4th half marathon in 2:00:14. I placed #36 out of 140 in my age group.
What made this such a victory was cutting 9 minutes of my previous time and 30 minutes off my first half marathon.
Seeing the improvement over time gives me hopes of being able to qualify for bigger races.
I’m looking forward to coming back next year and setting a new record.
